Chilly Girl Investigations

Chilly Girl

Chilly girl is one of the strangest and most interesting stories I have ever read. As I’m reading, I’m thinking how can someone be that cold? I’m also thinking she must be sick and they are going to mention it in the story, but she wasn’t; she always felt that cold, even at summer times. Then I’m thinking she has no warm nerve cells. The part where she said “I wish I could be in a cup of tea right now” (25), the man didn’t call her I again. I wouldn’t be involved with that kind of person either because I would find her abnormal. Then when I read the part where it said “she was worried her hand would freeze to the glass”. (27). Then I thought; now the author is exaggerating to make the readers feel sympathetic towards the character. After reading this, it made me realize that how each people can be so different. While I was further reading, the word cold was mentioned several times that’s when I kind of started feeling cold myself. This brought a little humour to my face. Therefore this story inspired me to investigate why some people feel cold all the time. I want to know the cause of it and what makes them different from us.

Investigations: Why do some people feel cold at all times?

While investigating I learned that in general, women seem to feel cold more than men. I also found out that a person’s body is capable to keep itself warm by trying to wear worm clothes but the capability is different from person to person. Some bodies are more able to keep their temperature regular and some are not. Here are some scientific reasons which could be the cause of feeling cold at all times. The blood flow gives us the feeling of warmth in our body. So, one of many reasons a person might feel cold all times may be because they are having circulatory problems. Hypo thyroid could be another reason, which when their thyroid is not making enough thyroid hormone. It can affect their whole body. One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is not being able to stand cold. Another very common reason for feeling cold all the time is-Raynaud’s disease. Women most often between the ages of 15 to 40 are more affected to primary raynaud’s. It is a condition that causes some body parts like, fingers, toes, and tip of the nose to feel cold most of the time. The blood vessels get thinner, not allowing blood circulation. Being anemic can also make you feel cold. Anemia is a condition in which there are not enough healthy blood cells to carry enough oxygen to a person’s tissues. When they are anemic their body destroys the red blood cells faster than they can be replaced. The larger body mass results in more heat being produced. This means that most people who have some kind of sickness can feel cold even at summer. But some people are not sick and they still feel cold most of the time. This is because they don’t have enough muscle mass or the insulating fat layer. Also, because they might have grown up in a hot country and coming to a colder country might be a big change for them. Therefore, there are many reasons why a person can feel cold at all times. This investigation helped me understand why a person might feel cold usually. Now, I know the different reasons to feeling cold. It is very interesting.

Between our legs

Five Emotional Responses

Page 1: I felt confused
I was really confused when I first started reading this story, especially the part where they say “between our legs, we hold the difference.” I wanted to know what it was that they are holding between their legs.

Page 1: I felt curious
On the first page where they are asking each other what happened, I was really curious to finding out what happened as well. I really wanted to know what was going on. First of all I didn’t know where they were and what they meant when someone said “This is a test. This is only a test”. Who was saying that?

Page 2: I felt sympathetic and sorrow towards the characters
“Our lips were smudged in deep purple. They looked fat and swollen like hammered out thumbs.” When I read these sentences I felt sorry for the girls because I thought someone had physically abused them.

Page 4: I felt careless towards them
After reading “We said “fuck” a lot. We tried to look bored. Bored silly” I thought these girls were trying really hard to be noticeable and act like they are all that. This is where I lost interest in the characters, thinking they are notorious.

Page 6: I felt angry
I thought they were such judgmental people when they said “we were in the room with all the ugly paintings.” It got me mad thinking how can they call piece of art ugly.

Investigating types of writing

 Spoken Word Poetry

What is Spoken Word poetry?

Spoken Word poetry is a very newly revitalized form of poetry that has been around since the 1990′s. Humorously enough, the term “Spoken Word” started as a sign label in record stores for non-musical selections like famous speeches and orations. During the 1990′s an increased interest in the Beat poets who were really dissatisfied with the world, and wrote really powerful poetry that was meant to make a statement.

Today, Spoken Word poetry is a very general category of poetry that is meant to be both performed and to make a powerful statement. Unlike some of the Beat poets who were interested in only shouting about the really rotten things in the world, Spoken Word poetry is more interested in voicing the problems and offering hope.

All Spoken Word poetry is meant to be read aloud, but not all poetry that is read aloud is Spoken Word.

How does Spoken Word poetry work?

Technically speaking, there are three elements of spoken word poetry, and in this order-

1. Rhythm-Even though Spoken Word is written in free verse, it has a definite driving rhythm, but not a regular rhythm like in sonnets or limericks. The rhythm is more closely related to the free verse rhythm that keeps the poem moving from one line to the next.

2. Repetition-Spoken Word poetry uses repetition like a wheel uses a hub and all the spokes link in the hub. Spoken Word poets return the same word or phrase multiple times within the poem to keep the reader returning time and again to the central focus.

3. Rhyme-While there is not a specific rhyme scheme, like in limericks or sonnets, the rhyme in Spoken Word is used to direct the readers ear toward a particular idea or theme. The entire poem is never rhyming. Rhyme is used in delicate balance with rhythm and repetition as a tool for the poet.

Spoken word poetry is sometimes performed with music, and sometimes without music. If a poet uses background music, it is only to enhance or compliment the poetry. The poetry is center stage, not the music.

How do I write Spoken Word poetry?

First, start with a cause! What are you angry about? What needs change in your world? Start with those issues that you want to address.

Next, make a word bank of important words that you want to include in your poem. Listen to how the words and phrases sound. Are there any that you could hinge your poem around?

Finally, start writing! Say your words aloud to hear them. After all, it is SPOKEN WORD POETRY!!!

Loud and quiet writing

What is loud writing?
Loud writing is when you break through your lethargy and lack of creative spirit. It is when you want to reach out to someone and deliver your message effectively. This type of writing creates intense and sends deep messages in a story. It can be called a powerful way of writing.

What is quiet writing?
Quiet writing is a type of writing which is peaceful and has a certain tone to it, when reading it a person can feel the inexpressiveness. It is a mild writing.

Investigating a Style of Writing

Style of Writing

Hyperbole

One of my favourite styles of writing is hyperbolehyde. The reason why I like it is because it makes the writing or speaking much more interesting and expressive. It is exciting because it is a figure of speech in which the expression is an evident exaggeration of the meaning intended to be conveyed, or by which things are represented as much greater or less, better or worse, than they really are; it is a statement exaggerated fancifully, through excitement, or for effect. Therefore, it creates a communicative speech.

Hyperbole is a form of speech which is exaggerated. It is often used as expressions such as “I nearly died laughing,” “These books weigh a ton,” and “I tried a thousand times.” Statements like this are not literally true, but while speaking or writing people make them sound impressive or to emphasize something, such as a feeling, effort, or reaction. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is rarely meant to be taken literally. Hyperbole is used to create emphasis. This makes the story or speech much more exciting compare to normal speaking and writing which is so plain and boring. It is an excessive statement or figure of speech not meant to be taken literally.
